WINDSOR, Colo. — Northern Colorado Rain FC made it back-to-back wins with a 4-1 victory over Flatirons FC on Thursday.
“Everything’s starting to click and it feels good,” Rain defender Katy Coffin, the team’s captain on the night, said. “It’s definitely a special group and definitely an honor to lead them.”
Just one of the five goals in the match came before halftime, and it was from the penalty spot. After a Flatirons handball in the box, Rain midfielder Jamie Tatum stepped up and slotted it home from the spot, giving Rain a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
“We talk about setting our bar, and reaching our bar, and I don’t think we did that in the first half, I wanted to see those goals earlier,” Rain FC head coach Kelly Brown said.
It took until the 70th minute for the Rain to find the eventual winner, when Coffin’s long ball found Maddie Burr in space on the right flank, Burr’s cutback then found Bella Amyx, who scored from close range to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
“That goal was all Maddie Burr,” Amyx said. “She took it down the line, did all the hard work, and gave it to me on a silver platter. All I had to do was tap it in.”
After Flatirons cut it to 2-1 in the 79th minute, Rain midfielder Ally Murphy-Pauletto latched onto a loose ball and curled a shot from outside the box past the Flatirons keeper to restore the hosts’ two-goal advantage in the 87th minute.
Scorer turned provider in the 90th minute, as it was Murphy-Pauletto with the cutback this time as Sabrina Weinman put the icing on the cake of a 4-1 win.
The win keeps the Rain with a perfect record at home, and within three points of division-leading Colorado Storm.
“You have to win the ones at home, that’s a no-brainer, so we’ll take the three points,” Brown said.
The Rain will be back in action Monday at 4Rivers Equipment Stadium with a visit from Albion SC Colorado. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
